    Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. While epilepsy can vary in severity, effective management is crucial to help individuals live full and active lives. Epilepsy care involves accurate diagnosis, tailored treatments, and ongoing support to help patients control seizures and improve their quality of life.

    Symptoms of Epilepsy

    • Recurrent seizures, which can vary in type (e.g., generalized, focal, or absence seizures).
    • Loss of consciousness or awareness during a seizure.
    • Uncontrolled jerking movements, often in the arms, legs, or face.
    • Staring spells or periods of confusion.
    • Auras or unusual sensations prior to a seizure.

    Types of Seizures in Epilepsy

    1. Focal Seizures: Affecting only one part of the brain, causing localized symptoms such as twitching, unusual sensations, or changes in perception.
    2. Generalized Seizures: Involving both sides of the brain, often leading to loss of consciousness and widespread body movements.
    3. Absence Seizures: Short periods of staring and loss of awareness, typically affecting children.
    4. Tonic-Clonic Seizures: Formerly known as grand mal seizures, these involve stiffening of the body followed by jerking movements and loss of consciousness.

    When to Consult
